Volunteer Opportunities: July 2025
Volunteer opportunities in South Jersey happening in July 2025
Hello, dear readers,
Wow, June went by fast! And with a roller coaster of weather conditions. I hope you have been able to protect yourself against the onslaught of terrifying news stories, dear reader. Remember that if you lose hope or give up, that’s one less person caring for and fighting for this planet. We can’t afford to lose the light you bring to this world! Don’t lose hope! We’re stronger together, and that, dear reader, is why you’re reading these words at all!
There isn’t a whole lot going on in terms of volunteer opportunities this month, it seems. However, with more people getting outside, I’ve noticed a terrifying amount of litter popping up in my neighborhood’s green spaces. I would encourage you to pick up any litter you might see as you’re out and about, enjoying nature’s beauty.
I haven’t made much progress in terms of setting up a Circularity clean up event. June was a busy month! However, I suppose if I casually told you that I was planning on cleaning up some litter in Stewart Park in Woodbury on the morning of Sunday, July 6th, no one would stop you from showing up… In all seriousness, I do hope to do a clean up event soon! I will likely share information for that in a singular post, so keep an eye out for that.
Without further ado, I give you, July’s volunteer opportunities!
Keep heart,
Shannon

Event: Foraging as Stewardship: Wineberries
Wineberries are one of New Jersey's most abundant summer brambleberries, but they are also very invasive and outcompete native plants. Join local experts Matt and Shannon for a wineberry forage walk at the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve in Princeton. During this volunteer stewardship session, participants will learn about the origins of wineberry and how to identify this invasive plant--and then will get picking! Folks will get the chance to take their wineberry harvest home. A recipe card will be included so that you can make wineberry jam at home!
Please bring a foraging bag, bucket, or basket to collect your berries. Please dress for the woods and know that you may venture off trail.

Event: Volunteer Shell Bagging
The Littoral Society is getting ready for their next reef project and could use your help!
In October, they will hold a Shell-A-Bration at Thompsons Beach in Delmont, NJ, which will include building a near-shore reef. But in order to be ready for that event, we need to prepare 3,000 shell bags. This is the one of several upcoming volunteer opportunities to help us fill shell bags.
Dress to get messy, bring a lunch or snack, a change of clothes, and help us get some shell bagged. We will have gloves, shell, bagging materials, and shell tubes.

Definitely not a big deal, but if you're able to edit your post, it says Saturday July 20 instead of Sunday. Just letting you know! Thank you for continuing to collect and share these events!
